Her hands have:
- rocked, fed and changed five babies
- nursed ailments and broken hearts
- brushed hair, washed faces and wiped runny noses
- knitted, sewed and crochet
- made phone calls and wrote letters to friends and family
- helped plan five weddings
- cooked thousands of meals
- baked countless buns and loaves of bread
- packed school lunches for forty years
- planted, tended and harvested many gardens
- preserved hundreds of jars of jam, fruits and pickles
- helped bring in the farm crops
- fed the farm animals - cows, pigs, chickens, cats and dogs
- milked the cows
- hauled pail after pail of water
- washed clothes with a wringer washer and hung the laundry on the clothesline
- cleaned the house - everything always in its place
- held her rosary as she prayed for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren
- selflessly cared for her husband, parents’ and mother-in-law through their last days on this earth
I was overwhelmed with emotion when I looked closely at this picture I took of Mom’s ninety-year-old hands. The skin that was once so soft and supple is now loose and almost translucent on her thin, little hands. When I think back on all her hands have accomplished, I am humbled.
Happy Ninetieth Birthday Mom!
