From the Archives Series | Thatcher Wheat 1938

A sample of Dad’s first crop - Thatcher Wheat that he grew at age 17 in 1938.

Dad won a red ribbon for this wheat in the 4H competition that year and it was sent on to further competition. He kept it for sixty years and when he and Mom left the farm my sister D divided the wheat into little jars so each of us five siblings would have some to keep.  I can always see my little jar of wheat through the glass door of my china cabinet. I take it out every year during harvest, hold it in my hands and remember where I came from.
